Garland is a Genome created by the people of Terra, and would go on to make more Genomes himself. Garland was created to look after Terrans' best interests and oversee the world's restoration as most of the people in Terra entered stasis waiting the time Terra would be reborn by assimilation of another planet. Boss battles should be used in smart ways instead of just being used as "end of the chapter, we gotta have a fight, even if we didn't actually write a win state for said fight". This is why the final fight with the Turks in VII is so perfect, because you can just go "this is pointless, let's not bother" and they agree.
At that point you might as well not have boss fights at all, because the battle part of the fight is pointless if the outcome is a predetermined loss, you know? Like 70% of the major story boss fights in that game REQUIRE you to win to progress, only for the villain to go "LOL NO" and beat the shit out of you in a cutscene right after. The more pointless it becomes to have boss fights with them at all.
The more times you fight the same character with them conveniently getting away or going HA HA, IT WAS MY PLAN TO LOSE, AND THUS I DID NOT ACTUALLY LOSE every time, the lamer it gets to fight them. Just imagine having her and Aerith standing there while Cloud and Zack call him “The coolest guy”.įor me, the ideal end to the Cloud/Sephiroth conflict (and I really want Tifa to be more active in that too, because he has fucked her over just as much if not more than Cloud, she deserves to get some shots in) is after beating him for the umpteenth time, Cloud convinces Sephiroth to finally give up his ethereal hold on Cloud, to further strengthen my personal belief that Sephiroth symbolizes “trauma”, and that the endpoint of Cloud’s story is to learn to finally let go of that trauma so it can no longer haunt him, both spiritually and literally.īecause honestly it just gets boring. Not even if they went back in time and got the ”Good Sephiroth”, there’s no version of this premise that would work, especially since we still see him committing his infamously evil acts like killing Tifa’s father and almost killing her.
I constantly worry about this even now, the way they position the three main swordsmen as if they might come together, because fans no doubt would love to see a triple tech with the three of them.īut no, I would hate this to the point that it could ruin the entire story. My absolute number one biggest fear about the Remake Trilogy is any notion of setting up a Redemption Arc for Sephiroth.
